Just 3 blocks West of the famous Park Avenue area, Hannibal Square boasts its own collection of great restaurants and wonderful shopping.
This area is filled with history. When the City of Winter Park was founded in 1881, they designated this neighborhood for African American grove and hotel workers to live. As the years went by, people passed away and the area had gotten run down. Starting in 2001 the city has done a fine job of bringing it back to life.

The Audubon Society of Florida was started in Maitland in Central Florida, just a short walk from Thurston House bed & breakfast. This rehabilitation center is home to many species, including eagle, kestrel, kite, osprey and more. Some that are brought to the center are rehabilitated then released, some are hurt too bad so they make the center their home for the rest of their days.

Hosted by the Maitland Chamber of Commerce, the 22nd annual festival will be held on the shores of beautiful Lake Lily, April 17 & 18. This juried art festival that brings over 125 artists and fine crafters to the area, is just minutes from Thurston House Bed & Breakfast.

This beautiful stroll takes you past Lake Eulalia, then along Lake Catherine and onto a peaceful side street, ending at the historic Lake Lily Park. Rooms are still available at Thurston House!

The Waterhouse Residence Museum will be open for viewing, and refreshments will be available for sale. This is a perfect way to spend a relaxing spring day in North Orlando!

The massive cross-shaped “electrolier” in Tiffany’s chapel is one of its most powerful elements. Weighing approximately 1,000 pounds and measuring 10 feet in height, this lighting fixture is comprised of cast metal and green turtleback glass. This reconstructed chapel was featured at the 1893 World’s Fair Exibition. This is only one of the magnificiant exhibits awaiting your visit!

Travel only a few minutes by car and enter a world of golf memorabilia and fine dining. “Tee Off” with lighter fare like Lobster & Shrimp Spring Roll, or enjoy their signature Oak Grilled Steak. Vendors will be selling a variety of plants including: bamboo, bromeliads, butterfly plants, citrus, ferns, fruit plants, gingers, heliconias, herbs, orchids, palms, roses, trees, vines and outdoor garden accessories! Bring a plant cart or wagon and fill it up! The garden offers free admission these two days too.

Maitland is proud to be the home to the annual Florida Film Festival at the Enzian Theater. Coming up next month – 4/9-4/18, this event will feature over 160 Independent films, representing over 30 countries.

The theme of this years event is – Flavors of the South – Grits, Grace and Gravy! Movies are shown at several locations, but the main location is just over one mile from beautiful Thurston House Bed & Breakfast in North Orlando. Book your room, buy your tickets and choose your porch chair. That is a great place to mull over the selections and decide which movies to see. We are an easy walk from the theater!

NYPD Pizza Comes to Maitland!

We are delighted that NYPD Pizza is now open for business in Maitland, Florida. The Precinct size pizzeria features ten large flat screen TV’s, individual table sound systems and a sports bar section to catch all the big games. More attributes include outdoor seating, a display wall for local artist’s pieces and a large window for customers to view where the NYPD Pizza chefs make the signature fresh dough throughout the day. All pizzas are hand-tossed and fresh made to order. The services offered include dine in, take out, delivery and catering. Open seven days a week; daily at 11AM.
The store is located at 400 South Orlando Ave near the intersection of Horatio next to Walgreens. Pizzeria phone number is (407) 790-4977. Innkeepers are duty bound to try every and all new restaurants. We are pleased to report the pizza is fabulous! There is so much more to try though. We enjoyed ours on the Thurston House bed & breakfast porch.
