Zora Festival 2013!

Zora Festival 2013! This year the festival theme says it all – “Zora’s Eatonville: Culture as Conservator of the Community’s Heritage” .

It is an outstanding line up of education programs, information about the roots of Eatonville, Haitian Art Stroll, outdoor festival of the arts, food trucks and MORE! Starting Saturday, January 26 and ending Sunday, February 3, this event Zora Festival 2013 will attract those from near and far…even Russia!

Thurston House, a north Orlando Bed & Breakfast, is proud to be just a short stroll up the road from this vibrant small community, the nation’s oldest incorporated African American municipality.

Minutes from our Maitland bed & breakfast, the annual festival honoring Zora Neale Hurston will take place this week. Especially popular is the downtown street festival that starts Friday and runs through Sunday.

This years theme is “Womanism, Feminism and Issues of Gender”, and the major focus of the festival is “Zora Neale Hurston and Her Connection to Haitian Culture”.

The only Thurston House  bed & breakfast availability we have left would be for Sunday night. Incoming guests can’t wait for this spectacular event!

January Events Near Thurston House

The start of a new year always brings some interesting events to Central Florida. Our Maitland bed & breakfast is a great place to stay while taking in all there is to do and see.

Have you ever seen a manatee? Guests already have enjoyed seeing record numbers at this Florida State Park – Blue Springs. It is a designated manatee refuge and winter home to increasing numbers of West Indian manatees. The yearly manatee festival is January 22 & 23rd. Orange City, where the park is located, is a short 30 minute drive north of Thurston House.

For something completely different, Culture & Cocktails is a new monthly event at the Maitland Art Center. The first one will be held January 14th from 6-9pm. The event will have featured artists, musicians and even some food & drink! The center is a nice stroll or a short drive from Thurston House.

Just down the street from our Central Florida bed & breakfast is the yearly festival to honor Zora Neale Hurston. The street party will take place 1/29 &30, and is free and open to the public. Come enjoy ethnic food, art and music!
